Roots and Wings: Notes on Growing a Family
Published in Hardcover by Health Communications (March, 1992)
Authors: Marvel Harrison, Terry Kellogg, Greg Michaels, and Gregory Michaels
Average review score:

Tender and inspirational thoughts on family principles
This is a lovely little book containing on the left pages one or more core principles of emotionally (& spiritually) healthy family life (with none of that saccharine & righteous moralism that often afflicts books of this genre), and on the adjacent, a reproduction of a captivatingly creative graphic - perhaps an oil or acrylic or chalk - on high quality stock. Visually alluring and emotionally pleasing.

Only about 50 pages of "back to core principles" reminders which we so often need.

I'm planning on buying several as "no special event" gifts and looking forward to seeing more of their work.

Ruben's Jungle = La selva de Ruben
Published in Hardcover by Globo Libros (01 December, 2002)
Authors: Carlos Harrison , Grizelle Paz, and Carlos Harrison
Average review score:

Enhanced with an accompanying "read-aloud" audio CD
The engaging sequel to "Ruben's Rainbow", Ruben's Jungle/La Selva de Ruben is a bilingual picturebook written in English and Spanish by Carols Harrison, and is about a young boy's dreamlike adventure in a jungle filled with exotic animals. Simple color illustrations by Grizelle Paz showcase an engaging text (further enhanced with an accompanying "read-aloud" audio CD with a choice of three tracks - one in English, one in Spanish, one reading both), make Ruben's Rainbow an especially welcome and recommended treat for young children learning to read in either or both languages.

Russell Chatham: One Hundred Paintings
Published in Paperback by Clark City Pr (September, 1990)

Mysteriously beautiful landscapes
I know taste in art is an individual thing, but these are absolutely wonderful paintings! No knowledge of fancy theories is necessary to understand these landscapes, they just ARE. Using muted (some would say murky) colors, Chatham's work is filled with mystery and wonder, love of the earth, and a luminous atmosphere. You can see the stillness in these paintings... They are full of spirituality and tragic beauty. Chatham's essay on his life is insightful and inspiring. I only wish some examples of artwork by his grandfather, Gottatdo Piazzoni, had been included, since that was the inspiration for Chatham's work. I have a lot of art books, this is the most inspirational. And it has become better over the years! It is not a "how to" book, but a retrospective of this artist's work over the last 30 years.

Seabirds of the World
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (25 November, 1996)
Author: Peter Harrison
Average review score:

One of the most complete guides of seabirds
This is one of the most complete guides to identifying seabirds. This book makes it easy to identify each species by providing photos, descriptions, illustrations & a helpful index of English names.

Two to four photographs of each bird are located in the front. English & scientific names are given below along with the page the text is on. The age of the bird & month the photo was taken are also noted.

Next, a text description is given for each seabird. This includes height, weight, traits in age group & their habits. Distribution is both described & shown on a map.

Each of the six seabird orders is described pointing out their different characteristics. There is also a detailed drawing of the topography of a seabird. Another large illustrated section points out the distinct features of some of the birds.

Seanchas Annie Bhan/the Lore of Annie Bhan
Published in Hardcover by Roberts Rinehart Pub (December, 1998)
Authors: Annie Bhan, Gordon W. MacLennan, Alan Harrison, Mairi Elena Crook, and Annie
Average review score:

Ulster Irish for the very advanced
This is a collection of Ulster Irish folklore with English translations. It gives the advanced learner a good insight into spoken Ulster Irish. As Annie Bhán was a sister of the Grianna brothers, whose novels and short stories are the most important part of Ulster Irish prose literature, this book is also a valuable help for those who want to read the Griannas' prose.

Seaweed Ecology and Physiology

Average review score:

Great for Algae students
I purchased this book because I was frustrated with the textbook in my alge class. I found this book to be both helpful and informative. It is not a difficult read and the authors didn't use a lot of technical words just to prove they knew them. Tons of great information.

Selected Climbs in North Carolina (Selected Climbs)
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (August, 2002)
Authors: Yon Lambert and Harrison Shull
Average review score:

Selected Climbs in North Carolina
This book was an excellent guide to many of the lesser known (and a good resource for the better-known) climbs in North Carolina. The breathtaking photography features the actual climbs and many of the local celebs of the North Carolina climbing community. Mr. Lambert provides interesting, yet informative text that does not get bogged down in climbing lingo. It is clean and precise, but does not fall into the trap of many guide books - boring. It is obvious that he has spent considerable time hanging from the climbs featured. The only complaint is that there is not yet a similar book for South Carolina mountains.

Somebody Catch My Homework Book Review
I really liked this book of poems. All of the poems are a lot of fun to read and the illustrations are really cute, colorful and eye-catching. The poems are about topics that all teachers, parents and school-aged children can relate to. I am in the process of getting my BS in Elementary Education and this is definitely a book that I want to read to my students and keep in my classroom library someday.
